Hello Commanders
Just thought I would add this to the guide section as I believe it's one of the faster ways to get into the game and out of that sidewinder!
From here we will assume that you've spent some time traveling between systems, getting familiar with supercrusing(SC), doing a few missions and possibly traded a few canisters of biowaste or scrap, but now it's time to discover Elite and earn some real wedge.
The trick to begin in the Sidewinder is to equip 2 gimballed weapons, one on each class one hardpoint. They are relatively inexpensive but if you cannot afford these yet the stock lasers do work just not as fast.
Next SC to a Nav beacon and drop out then start scanning passing ships to see if a wanted status appears under their name, you can then legally kill that npc and be awarded a bounty that you claim at the local station in the contacts section.
Smaller targets like other sidewinders and eagles should be quite easy to destroy but at this stage larger craft may be more risky. The trick is to wait for system authority vessels (police) to gang up on the craft and reduce the hull to a single digit percentage 8% or so before you attack and inevitably claim the bounty..this method even works for Anacondas where bounties of 300k aren't unheard of. Nav beacons are a slightly safer environment to begin with but often don't produce as high quality bounties as Resource Extraction Sites (RES) but these can be more dangerous for the beginner.
The killing process can be sped up by targeting the ships power plant either by scrolling down in sub targets panel, or pressing default key "y" on keyboard. Notice the module targeted appear next to your scanner.
This method works great in a wing and if your lucky can get you into a Viper within a hour!
Few notes to remember:
If you die your bounties are lost, so turn in after 100k, unless your in the safety of a wing ;-).
RES sites currently have three types of spawn:
No 1 has nothing of much value Vipers, Cobras and smaller.
No 2 has all above plus the larger bounties all the way up to Anacondas.
No 3 Is the money maker, the honey pleaser, goldilocks/butter zone and best case scenario... Every ship is a high bounty and there are no small annoying craft. You can millions an hour in this spawn.
If you drop into a RES and there are no high value (dropship, clipper, python, conda) within a few minutes either log out our jump out and in again to hopefully get a better spawn.
RES sites are asteroids belts and they mass lock your ship, meaning if you get in Barney rubble you must fly out of the field before you can jump to safety!
You do not loose money on outfitting so experiment with combinations of weapons, fixed, gimballed and see what works for you.
Remember to sell or downgrade outfitting to cheapest before you sell your ship, you loose 10% of ship value when selling/trading your ship.
Kill warrant scanner(KWS) goes on a utility mount and requires being set to a fire group to function like a weapon, you scan the targeted ship which allows you to claim any extra bounties from a different faction empire/federation etc, vastly improving profits
Rinse and repeat the above steps to get into a Vulture
This is not the only way but one of the fastest I have found so far to go from Sidewinder to Vulture
Stay strong, kind and lucky
Fly safe
