So as of right now I have a Hauler as my trading ship and an Eagle for my bounty hunting, etc. ship. Been doing some reading and starting to think that I need to forgo upgrading the Eagle and just buy something new such as a vulture or viper asap and upgrade that. Thoughts?

I'd go with the Viper. That way, you can get a more combat capable ship that will earn money faster than that Eagle will. Save up from there, for a Vulture.
The Eagle is a good combat ship, but it really needs to be in a wing, giving and receiving support.

the vulture is excellent, mine cost a little over 15 mil, but i was taking out condas and all sorts, i had class 3 pulse lasers, so never had to go back to station to reload, and was making a mil an hour easy, since i got a python bounty hunting seems poor, dunno if its my ship or ed in general, but the vulture is an excellent ship.

Python is hands down the best combat ship in the game but it does cost to make it that way...noting kills faster and the asp I believe is better thab vulture...No power constraints...4 medium harpoints is better than 2 large and...you can much shield cells all day long!!
